The Modern Silk Press: What I Want You to Know Before You Book

The Modern Silk Press: What I Want You to Know Before You Book

There’s something about a beautiful Silk Press that never goes out of style.

Movement. Shine. Softness. And that moment when you turn your head and realize your hair feels completely different without losing what makes it your hair.

I’ve always loved the Silk Press because, when it’s done thoughtfully, it can give natural hair an incredibly polished finish while still celebrating its versatility. In my chair, however, I’m never interested in creating a beautiful result at the expense of healthy hair.

For me, the health of your hair comes first.

A Silk Press Should Be More Than Straight Hair

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that a Silk Press is simply about getting the hair as straight as possible.

That isn’t my approach.

I look at your texture, density, condition, ends, previous services and overall hair goals before I decide how your hair should be prepared and styled. The finished look matters, but so does what happens underneath it.

A beautiful Silk Press should have movement. Your hair shouldn’t feel stiff or overloaded with product. And while shine is certainly part of the look, healthy-looking hair is much more important to me than making it artificially glossy.

Preparation Makes a Difference

The finished style begins long before the flat iron comes out.

Clean hair, proper conditioning, careful detangling and thoughtful blow-drying all contribute to the finished result. In fact, I believe the preparation stage is one of the most important parts of the service.

If your hair is dry, fragile or showing signs of breakage, I may recommend addressing those concerns instead of simply covering them with a finished style.

Sometimes the best thing I can do as your stylist is tell you what your hair needs—not just what will photograph beautifully today.

The Trend I Love Most: Hair That Still Moves

I’m seeing more clients embrace Silk Press styles that feel effortless rather than overly “done.”

Think soft movement, body, face-framing layers and ends that look healthy.

That is a trend I can get behind because it allows your haircut, texture and personality to remain part of the finished style.

Is a Silk Press Right for You?

If you enjoy wearing your natural hair in different ways, want to check the condition of your ends or simply want a polished style for an event, workweek or personal reset, a Silk Press can be a wonderful option.

But I want your appointment to begin with understanding your hair.

That is always where the real transformation starts.
